Getting a South Dakota Driver License
South Dakota teens are eligible to apply for an instruction permit when they reach the age of 14. The application must be submitted in person at a South Dakota licensing station along with the required documentation. The applicant will need to pass a knowledge test unless they have completed a state-approved driver’s education course. With an instruction permit, the driver must be supervised by a licensed driver at all times.
Once the permit has been held for at least 180 days (90 days if a driver’s education course has been completed), and if there have been no traffic convictions in the previous six months, the driver can apply for a Restricted Minor’s Permit. A drive test is required unless the applicant has passed a driver’s education course. Drive tests must be scheduled online and must be completed at a South Dakota driver exam station.
Drivers with a Restricted Minor’s Permit can drive unaccompanied between 6 am and 10 pm. For the first six months of holding the Restricted Minor’s Permit, the driver cannot carry passengers other than immediate family members or household members. After six months, one non-household passenger may ride with the holder of a Restricted Minor’s Permit.
Teens in South Dakota who have held a Restricted Minor’s Permit for a minimum of six months, have driven conviction-free for the previous six months, have a parent or guardian’s written approval, meet the requirements for an instruction permit, and are 16 years of age or older can advance to a full operator’s license.
South Dakota License Renewal
South Dakota drivers can renew driver’s licenses online, by mail, or in person.
Online and mail renewals are allowed once every 10 years. If you are not eligible to renew online or by mail, you must schedule a visit to a driver’s license station for renewal.
If your license has been expired for more than 30 days, you are required to renew in person at a South Dakota driver exam station.
South Dakota REAL ID
Do you fly commercially? Or visit federal property? Beginning October 1st, 2021, a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license will be necessary to board domestic flights and access federal property, such as military bases and government offices. South Dakota is converting all licenses and IDs to REAL IDs at the time of renewal. Additionally, all new licenses are REAL ID-compliant. The REAL ID has a gold star, or a star within a circle, to signify its compliance.
