Connecticut DMV Locations
The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is the official government department that distributes driver’s licenses and ID cards for residents of Connecticut.
Whether you need to get a new driver’s license, renew an existing license or replace a lost or stolen license, the Connecticut DMV has the authority to assist you.
There are multiple DMV office locations throughout Connecticut to process new and renewed license applications. Each location may provide only certain services. Check office hours and services provided before you visit any DMV office.
Search the State of Connecticut DMV website to find a Connecticut DMV office nearest you.
You may renew your Connecticut driver’s license on the date it is due or up to 180 days before that expiration date. Drivers 65 and older have the option to renew every 2 years.
When it’s time to renew your license, be sure to take the following documents with you to the DMV:
- Current driver’s license
- Documents to verify your identity (Review acceptable documents)
- Renewal application form received in the mail (if available)
- Payment (Note that payment options vary from site to site. Some locations do NOT accept cash payment. Check the DMV web site to verify payment options.)
Be aware of a process change. Your new/renewed permanent driver’s license will no longer be issued at the time of your visit. Rather, you will receive your license in the mail.
Do I need a REAL ID?
If you plan to board an airplane for a domestic flight, visit a military base or enter a federal building, you must present a REAL ID. This identification card is similar to your driver’s license but requires additional verification to obtain. The REAL ID takes the place of your existing driver’s license. A gold star on the card indicates that it is a verified ID.
Typically, when applying for a REAL ID card, you will be required to show:
- A U.S. Passport or original birth certificate
- Social Security card, and
- 2 pieces of mail to verify your Connecticut address (for example, utility bills or bank statements)
The U.S. government set a deadline for obtaining your REAL ID. Visit the Connecticut DMV web site for REAL ID details.
