Whether you plan to get your first driver’s license, renew a soon-to-expire license or take a road driving test, PennDOT offers plenty of convenient locations. You may choose to visit a Driver License facility, a Photo Center or a Third Party CDL Tester. Use the PennDOT facility locater to find the services closest to you.
Keep in mind that each facility may have unique hours of operation. Make sure the facility is open when you plan your visit.
Are you prepared if you must take a written exam or road test to receive your driver’s license? It doesn’t matter if you are a new driver or a mature driver with years of experience behind the wheel, understanding the rules and regulations of the road is important.
Review the Pennsylvania Driver’s Manual to make sure you are up to date with state laws and driver requirements.
How do I renew my driver’s license?
Your driver’s license issued by the State of Pennsylvania is valid for four years. It expires the day after your birthday.
You can expect to receive an alert notice from PennDOT three months before your license is due to expire. If you are 65 years or older, you may renew your license every two years instead of the required four years.
Driver’s license renewal process:
- Receive your PennDOT Invitation to Renew application in the mail or download a renewal form.
- Complete the application and return it to the address identified with a check or money order for the amount indicated on the form.
- Obtain a camera card, which will be mailed after your application is processed.
- Take your camera card to a PennDOT Photo Center to receive a new digitized version of your license. Keep in mind that you must show appropriate identification (e.g. valid driver’s license/passport/military ID/etc). You may also be asked to provide a portion of your social security number to verify your identity.
Do I need a REAL ID if I have a driver’s license?
REAL ID is a federal law that establishes security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses. The REAL ID is mandatory only if you plan to:
- Board a domestic flight
- Enter a federal building
- Visit a military facility
You do not need a REAL ID to:
- Visit the Post Office
- Receive federal benefits
Keep in mind that you must show certain documents in order to get your REAL ID including:
- Proof of identify: Birth certificate/valid passport
- Proof of social security number: Social Security card
- Two proofs of current address: Auto insurance bill/utility bill
